Discipline Equals Freedom. A man's entire philosophy boiled down to 3 words. This is what is most incredible about this book. The depth paired with the brevity. At 190 pages it isn't meant to waste your time and that's why I like Jocko's writing. It has an intent and it cuts out all of the clutter. He stays disciplined even within his writing. The book is broken into 2 parts: Thoughts and Actions. Part I (Thoughts) discusses his philosophy and Part II (Actions) discusses physical conditioning (diet, stretching, etc.). There is also a bonus appendix with very, very detailed workouts for different levels of physical condition (i.e. beginner to advanced). What most impressed me about this book was Jocko's ability to discuss a topic in detail and then summarize it succinctly in one line. This is his gift and he uses it in almost every chapter. Glory in solitude. Laughter wins. Curse the warmth of the bed. All of these ideas, and others, are included in Part I (Thoughts) of this field manual. While originally reading Part I (Thoughts), I thought it was somewhat unorganized. Why is he talking about Regret then talking about Focus? However, as I kept reading I realized that Jocko was just attacking the same problem from many different angles. It was as if Jocko were rotating around his core truth (Discipline Equals Freedom) and explaining it using different perspectives. For example, how do you view Discipline Equals Freedom through the lens of stress? Through regret? Through negativity? Through positivity? It is harder to follow the structure initially, but I believe this makes the work more accessible to a wider audience. For example, I found that some chapters spoke to me more than others, and I am guessing you will feel the same way.In Part II (Actions) Jocko summarizes what actions you can take to start moving in the right direction physically. I completely agree that thinking is nowhere near enough to actually make changes in your life. You have to act, and this part discusses the practical side of acting. For example, how to wake up early, how to eat, how to work out while traveling, etc. I recommend spending as much time, if not more, on acting (Part II) as you did on thinking (Part I). While the thinking will get you engaged, the acting will keep you engaged, and this is the key to staying disciplined. In conclusion, this isn't a typical motivational book. When reading it you can tell that the author means business. He lives this lifestyle. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. His Instagram account illustrates this better than anything. 2 daily photos. One at around 4:30 AM to show he is awake and acting, and one after his daily workout. Simple, but to the point. He lives it and I hope you can take some inspiration from this book to live closer to your truth. With that being said, I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book:"We are defeated one tiny, seemingly insignificant surrender at a time that chips away at who we should really be. It isn't that you wake up one day and decide that's it: I am going to be weak. No. It is a slow incremental process. It chips away at our will-it chips away at our discipline."I hope you enjoy Discipline Equals Freedom as much as I did.

The good: the book is beautiful. An excellent coffee table book for a man cave or gym. I will echo what other reviewers have said, the book is difficult to read with the pictures behind the white words, I see what they were going for, but my eyes get tired constantly switching from white on black, to white on light grey. Frankly, the pictures don't add much and don't really seem to have much to do with the topic. If you listen to the podcast or have read Jocko's other books, there isn't a lot of new content here. The passages seem like something from a motivational speaker without the added context that Jocko brings in his longer books or podcasts. It seems to me like this was an attempt to take the excellent videos Echo produces for youtube, and put them in book form. I just don't think it works. I find myself occasionally flipping it open, finding a random page, reading it, and feeling kind of icky as it feels like one more motivational speech that Jocko despises so much. For people new to Jocko, the content will feel corny and will likely turn them off to him. For hardcore fans like me, there just isn't much new here. If you are looking for a real substantive book, pick up Extreme Ownership. This book feels almost like an outline for EO.

The content is great but it's borderline unreadable on Kindle due to the terrible formatting and unchangeable colors. I hope future revisions eliminate the unnecessary black background. It might look cool on paper but it's distracting and hideous in electronic form.

It's not a field manual, and wasn't exactly what I expected. But I finished it within 2 days and I love it.The first half, "Thoughts" felt a little silly, especially if you are already familiar with Jocko's message and/or the Podcast. Jocko goes through all the Jocko-isms (getting after it, discipline, dealing with difficult circumstances, etc...). But I later felt that it is a necessary part of the book.It gets better in the second half, where Jocko goes into principles of sleeping, training, fueling the body, etc. He sheds more light on how his sleeping schedule looks like, and his recommendations on which martial arts to train and why are spot on (I've been in the martial arts for many years: striking, grappling, weapons, modern, and traditional, and I agree with his recommendations.) Even though I know most of these things, I'd pay the small price of the book just to hear it from someone else with experience and pedigree like Jocko. In the appendix are the workouts: for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. It's always good to see someone else's workout programming. There are endless ways to program for physical training, and you can learn something from anyone who has seen good results on a program. All said and done, the book doesn't provide any special methods or training secrets. Just good principles to live by.This is fitting, because the secret is that there are no secrets.

Exactly what it says it is, a field manual. If I had to describe it I would call it the ultimate excuse killer. Jocko Willink instructs you how to navigate the mine field of excuses you'll encounter while you're getting after it, whatever "it" may be. From procrastination to injury, from why, where, when, to your own weakness. Jock lays out straight forward truths to act upon if you want to walk your own disciplined path. I believe anyone who is striving to add more discipline to their life in any area for any reason will find this book inspiring and helpful if they are willing to be honest with themselves.Read it through with the audio book so that later when you crack it open you'll read it in your head in The Jocko Willink voice. What are you waiting for, get the book, and get after it.
