While jazz is not central to the narrative of Rules of Civility, the music and its various formulations are an important component of the book’s backdrop.

On the night of January 16, 1938, Benny Goodman assembled a bi-racial orchestra to play jazz to a sold-out Carnegie Hall--the first jazz performance in the hallowed hall and one which is now famous for bringing jazz (and black performers) to a wider audience. I am not a jazz historian, but for me the concert marks something of a turning point in jazz itself--from the big-band, swing-era sound that dominated the 1930s (and which the orchestra emphasized on stage that night) towards the more introspective, smaller group styles that would soon spawn bebop and its smoky aftereffects (ultimately reaching an apogee with Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue in 1957). For it is also in 1938 that Coleman Hawkins recorded the bebop antecedent "Body & Soul" and Minton’s Playhouse, one of the key bebop gathering spots, opened in Harlem. By 1939, Blue Note Records was recording, and Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk were all congregating in New York City. From 1935-1939, Goodman himself was stepping out of the big-band limelight to make more intimate improvisational recordings with a quartet including Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton.

My assertion of this as a turning point (like most such assertions) is rough, inexact and misleading, but it helps give shape to an evolution and bring into relief two ends of a jazz spectrum. On the big-band front, the power of the music naturally springs from the collective and orchestration. In numbers like "Sing, Sing, Sing," the carefully layered, precisely timed waning and waxing of rhythm and instrumentation towards moments of unified musical ecstasy simply demand that the audience collaborate through dance, cheers, and other outward expressions of joy. While in the smaller groups of bebop and beyond, the expressive power springs more from the soloist and his personal exploration of the music, his instrument, and his emotional state at that precise moment in time. This inevitably inspires in the listener a cigarette, a scotch, and a little more introspection. In a sense, the two ends of this jazz spectrum are like the public/private paradox of Walker Evans’s subway photographs (and of life in the metropolis itself.)

If you are interested, I have created an playlist of music from roughly 1935-1945 that spans this transition. The playlist is not meant to be comprehensive or exact. Among other items, it includes swinging live performances from Goodman’s Carnegie Hall Concert as well as examples of his smaller group work; there are precursors to bebop like Coleman Hawkins and some early Charlie Parker. As a strange historical footnote, there was a strike in 1942–1944 by the American Federation of Musicians, during which no official recordings were made. As such, this period at the onset of bebop was virtually undocumented and thus the records of 1945 reflect something of a culmination of early bebop rather than its starting point. The playlist also reflects the influence of the great American songbook giants (Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hart, the Gershwins), many of whom were at the height of their powers in the 1930s. --Amor Towles

This book will challenge your preconceptions about the anger response while also providing you with new ways of introspection. The author provides a great guide for improving your life and a roadmap to get out of the anger habit. She writes from a Buddhist psychology point of view but her philosophy can be broadly applied. I have recommended this book to others with great success.

In a world filled with so many things to be angry about I find this book so helpful. I write my anger on Facebook, email and feel it so often when I see how people and animals and the earth are treated by those who's greed has no end. I know that my anger makes the fire hotter and so was so happy to find this book. It gives me the answer to what can be done to fight, in a different way.I think it would be a wonderful world if we all could live in this way. Please read this.

There is a lot to reflect on in this book. I got it for someone else who has anger management issues but felt that I should read it first before giving it to the person. I found it very useful and I am already a very patient person. It gets a little more complicated midway or near the end and you will not be able to speed read it, but there is a lot of material to digest which is good.

Terrific read, compelling and informative from the first page. Authors bring exceptional insights to subject matter.

I recommend this book to everyone I know who wants help with forgiveness, or wants to know how to deal with their negative emotions. I keep it with me on my Kindle to read whenever I have free moments. It adds to the knowledge I have about this practice and to my own meditation practice daily.This is a must read.

The Dalai Lama does a fantastic book distinguishing ethics, morality, character and spiritualness in a way not tied to religion. How could such a prominent figure in the Buddhist faith not mention any swaying ideology to his faith and practice? Could the Pope right a book on how to be a good person outside of the realm of Catholicism? Regardless, he does it. A perfect distinction on living life similar to that of water (character/values) and tea (religion). One element you absolutely need to survive as a human, I'll let you guess which one it is ;) Overall, a good back that is also a quick read straight from the mouth of the Dalai Lama, himself. Although, I don wonder how royalties on this book deal or purchases work for him? I'm sure they go to the monastery -anyways that's another topic. Good read here!

The intention of this book is to cultivate human principles that are highly needed nowadays, and from my opinion the author made them clear and enjoyable to understand. I think everyone should check for themselves whether it makes sense or not.Again, we can find that mindfulness and meditation are the primary tools for human beings to remove delusions and misconceptions in our mind.

This is one of my favorite books of all times. Dalai Lama's approach to ethics as a system of values beyond any religion, for every human being, is something that resonates with me strongly. I had the honor of attending a public lecture by Dalai Lama on a closely related topic - ethics in education, and the book is a very nice continuation and expansion of that conversation. Highly recommend it to everyone.

Finally someone has said the obvious: You don't need religion to do good deeds and love other other people. BRAVE Dalai Lama. Maybe it takes true enlightenment to state the obvious truth that the time for "religion" may have passed and humans may be ready to do good things simply because they help others to be successful and happy! This is a truly enlightened man who can realize even his own faith is no longer needed, but yet he has the wisdom to keep the wonderful, useful and sustaining knowledge behind it intact for the benefit of mankind.

I wish all religious leaders were like the Dali Lama in that they are more concerned about the general state of the world, than with pushing their own religion. This book does not push for Buddhism, but for a more human (or humanistic) approach to live to better the world for everyone. I guess the fact that he doesn't have a grand office or a gold throne to sit on makes it easier for him to espouse humanity over promoting his own cause. It also seems that he is more well-traveled and had interacted with a larger slice of humanity than many other religious leaders.Worth the read.

This is the third book I have read by the Dalai Lama. Each time, I'm kinda thinking... will this book really have anything new that I haven't read in the previous books? And then I discover that the answer is unequivocally... yes. This Dalai Lama is a thinker and spiritual leader who has added greatly to my understanding and appreciation of life.
