About the Author

Brian J. Cole, MD, MBA, is a professor in the department of orthopedics with a conjoint appointment in the department of anatomy and cell biology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In 2011 he was appointed as chairman of surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital. He is the section head of the Cartilage Research and Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center, a multidisciplinary program specializing in the treatment of arthritis in young active patients. He is also the head of the orthopedic master's program and trains residents and fellows in sports medicine and research. He lectures nationally and internationally. Through his basic science and clinical research he has developed several innovative techniques for the treatment of shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions.

Dr. Cole has been chosen as one of the Best Doctors in America each year since 2004 and as a Top Doctor in the Chicago metro area each year since 2003. In 2006 he was featured as Chicago's Top Doctor and pictured on the cover of Chicago Magazine. In 2009 Dr. Cole was selected as the NBA Team Physician of the Year. In 2013, Orthopedics This Week noted that Dr. Cole was chosen by his peers as one of the top 19 sports medicine specialists in the United States.

He is the physician for the Chicago Bulls NBA basketball team and co-physician for the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball team and the baseball team at DePaul University in Chicago. Dr. Cole hosts SportsMedicineWeekly, a radio show on Chicago's ESPN 1000 WMVP-AM. He lives in Chicago.

Robert Panariello, MS, PT, ATC, CSCS, is a founding partner and chief clinical officer with Professional Physical Therapy, which has 40 facilities in the New York and New Jersey metro areas, and the Professional Athletic Performance Center in Garden City, New York. He has bachelor’s degrees in physical therapy and physical education and athletic training from Ithaca College in New York, and a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Queens College in New York.

Panariello has more than 30 years of experience in sport physical therapy, athletic training, and performance training of athletes. He was the head strength and conditioning coach at St. John’s University in New York (1986-1995), the World League of American Football’s NY/NJ Knights (1991), and the WUSA NY Power Women’s Professional Soccer League (2001-2002). He is a consultant to many NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college and university teams, coaches, and players.

Panariello received the 2015 APTA Sports Physical Therapy Section Lynn Wallace Clinical Educator Award and the prestigious National Strength and Conditioning Association President’s Award in 1998. In 2003 he was elected to the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame. He lives in New York.

I was very busy keeping my yard perfect and my house very nice from painting, plumbing, building a playhouse on stilts 12x12, changing carpet to making very nice scrapbooks and wreathes. I always could think of a project. My nickname was “project girl” this gave me happy endorphins.I really enjoyed my family, as I was always the one they called for information. I did play the role of the middle child; according to the birth order book I was the glue that kept the balance together. Me, working at my restaurants with my employees was not a job, especially since I did not see this as work. I loved to make subs and keep my store very clean all day long. My employees would ask if I got tired of making subs. I would always tell them NO! I love it gives me a natural high. Around the end of 2006 I noticed that my attention and desire was changing from being all that I could be, to I do not care. I was feeling like I was going crazy in my body. I was getting very sensitive and just feeling angry and annoyed. I was starting to get snappy and could not remember. I was not being able to remember numbers and this had always been my specialty. I would even miss my turns on the road. My daughter would say Mom what’s going on with you. This went on for a couple of years getting aggressively worse. I got to the point where I could not even go to my store it just made me feel anxiety. I was starting to experience all these pregnant symptoms and would swell more while I was in the store; even my employees were getting a little concerned with how I was acting. The big day came when I literally felt my brain shutting down and my balance and all cognitive was not there. I am so amazed how I survived this nasty nightmare. I pray that my story will help millions around the world from getting as bad as I did by bringing awareness to be preventive.

About the Author
Michael W. Maher, Ph.D., is Professor of Management and Accounting and Associate Dean for Faculty at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Gonzaga University and his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Washington (Seattle). He has experience in public accounting, has co-managed his own business, and consulted with numerous companies and governmental bodies. Dr. Maher is active in the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, including service as president. He has co-authored numerous books and published articles in numerous journals.

Clyde P. Stickney is the Signal Companies' Professor of Management, Emeritus at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College. He received his DBA from Florida State University and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Tuck School in 1977. He has also taught at business schools in Japan, Australia, Finland, and Germany. Prof. Stickney has authored and coauthored books on financial accounting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis.

Roman L. Weil, Ph.D., CPA, is the V. Duane Rath Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Chicago and has within recent years been Visiting Professor at the Haas School of the University of California, Berkeley; Carnegie Mellon University; Harvard Law School; Princeton University; and New York University. He has designed and implemented continuing education programs for partners at two of the large accounting firms and for employees at several operating corporations. Dr. Weil has co-authored dozens of books. His lay articles have appeared in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal. He has published more than 80 articles in academic and professional journals, most recently on financial literacy for corporate governance and on the exposure of wine snobbery.
